Successful Clean-up Day on Gemsstock
Nearly 60 people gathered at the valley station of the Gemsstock gondola in beautiful weather last Saturday. They had come to participate in Clean-up Day, which the SkiArena had organised together with the NGO Summit Foundation. After fortifying themselves with a small snack, they set out into the terrain, in some cases at up to 3,000 metres above sea level, collecting things that don't belong in the countryside. As in the past, the litter was weighed and sorted so that it could be disposed of properly. Hot topic during the after-work refreshment: Who made the most unusual find?
This year, Clean-up Day was held on Gemsstock for the first time. That gave the roughly 60 volunteers the unique opportunity to take the gondola in summer up to Gurschen and Gemsstock. As another highlight, the teams on Gurschen took the chairlift back to the mid-station. This exclusive ride brought a smile especially to the faces of the 17 children on hand.
Interesting finds
Once again, surprising items were found: ancient skis, hotel key cards, jewellery and articles of clothing. Under the chairlift, there were a great number of cigarette butts, tissues and snack wrappers. The workers also found SkiArena material on and alongside the ski pistes that had been snowed over. At the valley station, the Summit Foundation weighed the trash bags, and then the material was sorted. In all, about 260 kilogrammes of litter was collected, most of it recyclable. To the great joy of the children, the prize for the most unusual find went to two girls, who found a metal wheel in the middle of the countryside.
