National Future Day: schoolchildren experience the world of work up close
For schoolchildren in Grades 5 to 7, Thursday 14 November 2019 was an exciting day. They were encouraged to leave the classroom and experience the world of work. More than 20 children chose to spend National Future Day at the Andermatt Swiss Alps Group and Andermatt-Sedrun Sport AG. There they discovered the diverse professional world of an Alpine destination. A day full of new impressions!
On 14 November, the girls and boys waited excitedly in front of the mountain railway ticket office in Andermatt that morning. A total of 19 students took part in the official programme. Among them were both children of employees and students from the Urner Oberland region, who were also able to register. In addition, some children took the opportunity to accompany their parents or caregivers to their workplace for a whole day.
After a brief welcome in the morning, the official programme began with an IT workshop at Andermatt Swiss Alps. The students were tasked with programming a game. After a short break, the next item on the programme was an insight into the world of the hotel industry. On a tour of the Radisson Blu Hotel Reussen, the children learned about various occupations, including behind-the-scenes jobs. In the subsequent competition at the Hotel-Restaurant Spun, the children had 15 minutes to set the table perfectly. All the new impressions made them hungry, and the pasta party at Restaurant Biselli came at just the right time.
Inspiration and ideas for the future
This year, too, Raphael Krucker, CEO of Andermatt Swiss Alps, took time out after lunch to meet the students. ‘What is your dream job?’ was the question put to the talents of tomorrow. In conversation, we were able to learn not only about their career aspirations, but also to get their input on what is still missing in Andermatt or what they really like – the ice rink, for example.
Exclusive insight into the preparations for the season on Gemsstock
Another highlight awaited the children in the afternoon. They were given an exclusive insight into the preparations for the season on the mountain. Although the ski resort is not yet open, they were allowed up the mountain and were able to watch the preparations for the season live at Gurschen. Among other things, the piste rescue team carried out a detonation, and the ‘bomb’ left a lasting impression on the children.
Exhausted but full of new impressions and ideas, the children set off for home after a short final quiz and a visit to the cable car company's Operation Centre.
